We are expanding our range of metal working services, to be one of the biggest and best metal working company servicing metal pressings, CNC machining and laser cutting, all under one roof.

These are the strong and positive words of Derick Broekhuizen (35), owner and MD of Stikland, Cape Town based Broekhuizen Metal Pressings (Pty) Ltd. Recognised as a leading manufacturer of metal pressings in the Western Cape, this dynamic and innovative company is investing in new state-of-the-art equipment, and in its people.

Established in 1999, the company has grown tremendously during its 11 years of existence. From a humble beginning in a small rented factory, to its own 2500m plant in Stikland. "My first client was a fencing company in Blackheath, doing all their punching and press work," says Broekhuizen.

Broekhuizen Metal Pressings has focussed its core business in the design and manufacture of pressed components. Over the years it has grown to become a well known automotive component supplier. The company now specializes in forming and deep drawing of medium sized components and also offers production facilities for punching, blanking, cropping, threading, riveting, welding and assembly.

Broekhuizen Metal Pressings today employs 35 skilled people, which includes technical designers, toolmakers, production setters, maintenance staff, quality controllers, as well as a full office administration complement.

"With our modern equipment I believe that we can offer the finest in metal pressings and several other types of precision metal fabrication to meet all our customer's needs. We currently have 25 presses in our factory with more to be added in later stages of development," enthused Broekhuizen.

"The range consists of 16 C-frame presses, four with de-coilers and automatic feeders for high volume work ranging from 15 ton to 125 ton, two mechanical H-frame presses - 60 ton and 150 ton - with cushions and seven 4-column hydraulic presses with cushions for deep drawing work.

Our hydraulic presses have a rigid and sturdy steel welded construction for minimum deflection of the frame and we can manufacture components with a maximum daylight of 680mm, all with buffer cylinders (max 190mm stroke) and they range from 60 ton to 120 ton. They are compact with a built in hydraulic power pack for multi productivity. These presses are economical, operate with high speed and can be used for a variety of projects," explained Broekhuizen.

Bending and guillotining division

The bending division consists of one hydraulic press brake that has a capacity of 3000 mm x 100 ton, a hydraulic guillotine with a capacity of 2500 mm x 8 mm and one mechanical guillotine with a capacity of 2500 mm x 5 mm.

Tooling Division

The toolroom consists of three milling machines, four lathes, two surface grinders and three drilling machines. "This division provides for the design and manufacture of small to medium sized press tools."

CNC Division

"We are very proud of our machining division which offers our customers a full range of specialised CNC milling and turning services. It is a division that was formed in 2009 to satisfy client demand."

Pride of place in this division is a new state-of-the-art Doosan machining centre that not only has rapid traverses on the X and Z axis, but also provides for C axis contouring as well as live tooling. Rotating tools can be mounted at any of the turret's 24 stations for milling, drilling and rigid tapping. It can machine parts as large as 248.9 mm diameter by 548.6 mm long, or bar stock to 50.8 mm diameter.

"The advantage of using CNC technology not only ensures accuracy but also quick turnaround times allowing pricing to be more competitive.

"With our modern equipment I believe that we can offer the finest in metal pressings and several other types of precision metal fabrication to meet all our customer's needs. We currently have 25 presses in our factory with more to be added in later stages of development," enthused Broekhuizen

Besides the tooling our highly skilled machinists can produce parts in medium to large quantities using a wide range of materials," Broekhuizen said proudly.

"Our machines and components feature the same outstanding quality that has become a Broekhuizen tradition. Adhering to the ISO 9001-2008 Quality Management System, we service small, medium and large companies. From low volume general press work to high volume automotive pressings, no run is too big or too small."

"Other service markets include building hardware, the furniture industry and the agricultural industry. Our clients recognise Broekhuizen Metal pressings as one of the most highly respected companies within the metal manufacturing industry. We are committed to service, quality and outstanding technical knowledge," said Broekhuizen.

"We have earned a great deal of respect from the metal working industry through my business philosophy of: "Stick to the basics, work hard and pay attention to detail."

Being a successful entrepreneur in the metal manufacturing industry, Derick Broekhuizen adds to his philosophy by giving the following guidelines which have contributed to his success:

  • You must have passion for what you do.
  • Trust your instincts.
  • Set the standard. Don't expect your employees to work harder than you.
  • Invest only in something that you understand and in people you can trust.

New Trumpf 3.2kw TruLaser 3030

"We pride ourselves in constantly being innovative and setting new standards within the industry," says Broekhuizen. To keep abreast of the current technological demands in the metal industry, Broekhuizen has expanded its services to its clients by purchasing a Trumpf Laser Cutting Machine from Retecon Machines. With our new laser cutter we plan to diminish the exclusivity of laser cutting and expose the market to everyone and still obtain the highest quality.

"Our machines and components feature the same outstanding quality that has become a Broekhuizen tradition"

It can cut mild steel up to 20 mm, stainless steel up to 12 mm and aluminium alloy up to 8 mm." The installation of the laser is currently taking placing and will be in production from the first week of May 2010.

More details on the laser division will follow in the next issue.

The 3.2kw TruLaser 3030 Lean Edition is valued at over R4 million and has the latest technology from Trumpf.

An exciting launch for Broekhuizen Metal Pressings (Pty) Ltd is our new 300 Ton 4-Column Hydraulic Press which will be arriving in February 2011. It was produced by the largest manufacturing company in China of Hydraulic and Power presses and took 10 weeks to manufacture. The YQ27 315 series was specially built in China according to Derick Broekhuizen's (MD) strict specifications in meeting our production targets. Important advantages of the YQ27 315 is it's pressing speed, capacity and large cushion. Each machine gets tested by running for 72 hours continuously before shipment.

This Hydraulic press has been specially designed for pressing and deep drawing of metal products, with an 820 x 670mm cushion and with a multi knockout pin design.

The table has an effective size of 1260 x 1160mm which makes it suitable for a wide range of products from small to big, adding to the flexibility of the YQ27 in a production environment. The ram has an 800mm stroke and overall table opening size of 1250mm.

All the functions are controlled by Mitsubishi PLC ensuring accurate switching of hydraulic valves eliminating possible failure of relays. The stroke is controlled by solid state proximity switches which add to reliability of the YQ27 Hydraulic press.

The structure is 4800mm above the floor and weighs 18 tons without 1600 litres of hydraulic oil. This includes an increased knockout stroke of 350mm, a custom knockout hole to accommodate existing knockout tooling and increase pressing speed of 12 mm/sec to 25mm/sec, which required redesigning the hydraulic circuit and adding an additional 22kW hydraulic pump and motor.

The standard approach speed of 200mm/sec and 120mm/sec return was kept standard. Overall, the YQ27 Hydraulic press will increase our production to a new level in meeting our targets, ensuring customer satisfaction and service excellence.
